Lumineers & Veneers

porcelain teeth
A veneer is a thin layer of material placed over a tooth, either to improve the aesthetics of a tooth or to protect the tooth's surface from damage. There are two main types of material used to fabricate a veneer; composite and porcelain.

COMPOSITE VENEERS

Composite is directly placed in the mouth with bonding techniques. The composite used is a resin based material. Composite veneers are placed in one appointment and is minimally invasive. This treatment is generally done in people with small imperfections, and can be very quick and effective. It is important to remember that composite will stain with coffee, tea and smoking. It also has a shorter lifespan than porcelain veneers, and will last around 5 to 7 years. Staining might occur earlier than that, but can be polished off as part of the maintenance. One of the main differences between composite and porcelain veneers is that composite is generally much cheaper than porcelain veneers.

PORCELAIN VENEERS

A Porcelain veneer may only be indirectly fabricated. A Laboratory technician fabricates the veneer out of porcelain, and then stains and glazes the porcelain for a natural looking appearance. The material we use to fabricate porcelain veneers is called E-max. This is a very durable material and allows for maximum aesthetics. Porcelain veneers can be done without removing much of the tooth structure underneath, and at times we can even cement the veneers without doing any drilling on the tooth. One of the benefits of porcelain veneers are that they don’t discolour with time. They maintain the bright white colour for much longer than normal teeth or composite veneers.

LUMINEERS VS VENEERS, DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LUMINEERS AND VENEERS

Lumineers are exclusive, one-of-a-kind products of the DenMat Lab at DenMat, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of professional dental materials. Lumineers are digitally designed to be ultra-thin (about as thin as a contact lens), so they can be applied seamlessly over your teeth to deliver a natural looking smile. Traditional veneers are generally thicker, and thus require more aggressive and irreversible removal of healthy tooth structure. The extensive preparation technique frequently requires shots and anesthesia to minimize sensitivity and pain, and typically involves placement of acrylic temporaries for over two weeks between visits. The minimally invasive Lumineers technique typically eliminates the need for shots or temporaries, so while you wait for your custom-made Lumineers, you’ll look great and feel great. Lumineers are unique in that they are ultra-thin (approximately 0.2 mm) and highly translucent, allowing them to replicate the natural appearance of enamel. While traditional veneers are much thicker, requiring the grinding down of your original tooth structure, Lumineers are so thin that little to no tooth reduction is necessary. Additionally, the durability of Lumineers allows them to resist wear and remain resilient to last over 20 years.

WHY ARE LUMINEERS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Lumineers solve a variety of dental Problems to Give You the Perfect Smile in Just 2 Easy Visits. Whether your teeth are discoloured or chipped, moderately crooked or to eliminate spacing and gaps, to reshape small or misshapen teeth, Lumineers is likely a perfect solution for you. Only a Certified Lumineers Dentist can truly determine if you are a candidate for Lumineers.

HOW DO LUMINEERS WORK?

In only 2 easy and comfortable dental visits, you can have the beautiful natural looking smile you want! After your initial consultation, your Certified Lumineers Dentist will take an impression of your upper and lower teeth, and send the mould to an authorized Lumineers laboratory along with photos and other records that ensure the very best case for you. Unlike traditional veneers, there is typically no need for extensive drilling, shots or unsightly acrylic temporaries. On your next visit, generally a couple weeks later, your dentist will place your Lumineers. Before Lumineers are bonded in place, it is important to try them on to ensure a good fit. Teeth are then moderately etched to prepare for placement and then bonded one by one. Your dentist will then check your bite to make sure your contacts are balanced to avoid chipping your Lumineers through the course of daily function.

WHAT’S INVOLVED WITH A LUMINEERS PROCEDURE?

Rest assured, the Lumineers procedure is a completely pain-free way to reshape and permanently whiten your teeth. Because they are ultra-thin, in most cases you will get a perfect fit without shots or grinding down of the original tooth structure. Once the procedure is completed, there is no post placement discomfort or sensitivity, which means Lumineers will look natural and feel comfortable from the moment they are placed. On the first visit, your dentist will create a precise mould. Then you and your dentist will determine the shade of white that is right for you. After your first visit, your dentist will send the mould off to the DenMat Lab for your custom Lumineers to be created. With Lumineers , you don’t have to wear temporaries. When your dentist receives your custom Lumineers , they are checked for fit and shade. Then during your second visit, your Lumineers are painlessly applied without shots or drilling of sensitive tooth structure. And you’re ready to start smiling out loud! Drink and eat what you want with confidence because Lumineers are applied in the most durable way possible. However, Lumineers don’t replace good hygiene, so you should continue to visit your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and cleaning to keep your Lumineers looking their best and the rest of your teeth and gums healthy.

CAN LUMINEERS BE TAKEN OFF IF I WANT THEM REMOVED?

Yes, Lumineers are completely reversible because there’s no grinding down of healthy tooth structure, in most cases. Your natural teeth are still intact and strong.

I THINK I NEED BRACES, BUT I REALLY DON'T WANT TO GO THROUGH THE INCONVENIENT, UNSIGHTLY, AND TIME-INTENSIVE PROCESS. CAN I GET LUMINEERS INSTEAD?

In most cases, yes! Your dentist will be able to evaluate your teeth and decide whether orthodontics is necessary. If you do not have a severe problem, Lumineers will reshape your teeth, making them look straighter and more uniform, as well as whiter, something you don’t get with braces.

HOW MUCH DO LUMINEERS COST? PRICE OF LUMINEERS?

The cost of Lumineers or other smile enhancement should never keep you from achieving the smile you've always wanted. Getting that perfect smile is an important investment because you are investing in yourself, which can pay important dividends in terms of self-esteem, confidence, career and relationships. And because the cost of treatment with Lumineers is usually comparable to the cost of braces or invisible aligners like Invisalign®, it’s easier than ever to find the right option for your smile and your budget. As you explore your options, it is important to keep in mind that this is a lifetime investment, so quality of treatment should largely outweigh any minor differences in price. In fact, since Lumineers are proven to last up to 20 years, the difference you pay to get the ultimate results you deserve might cost as little as pennies more a day. A poor result may cost you far more in the long run.
